Welcome to The Functional Yoga Teacher Training
We have been practicing yoga since 1996 and leading teacher trainings since 2008. All these years of experience have contributed to the creation of a strong curriculum based on the theory and practice of all aspects of yoga and movement. Our trainings are designed to provide our students with a deep and solid foundation for teaching and practicing with confidence and skill.
TFY trainings are for those who want to deepen their own personal practice and understanding of their bodies and minds, as well as for those who want to become yoga teachers or are already (yoga) teachers and movement professionals who want to expand their knowledge and learn more about our functional approach to movement (and anatomy).

The Module System
TFY trainings are made up of 50-hour modules or building blocks, if you will. These modules can be taken as stand-alone trainings, or they can be combined to create 100, 200, 300 and 500-hour Yoga Alliance accredited trainings. Individual modules qualify as YACEP (Yoga Alliance Continued Education Program) trainings and can also be combined with other modules allowing you to design the training that fits you best!
We offer two pre-designed, 200-hour programs, put together by us to provide you with the solid foundation required to teach yoga with confidence.
Both of our 200-hour programs are centered upon three pillars: Anatomy, Philosophy and Practice.
Anatomy
Understanding the body is understanding the poses
The study of anatomy is much more than memorizing the names of bones and muscles. Understanding how bodies can and cannot move enables us to practice and teach poses safely and efficiently.
We teach functional anatomy, scientifically proving that bodies are unique in their structure and constitution. This uniqueness means that poses may look different when different people do them. When you know what a pose should be doing for you – the function of a pose – you will be able to adapt and adjust the pose to suit your body and the bodies of your students. This leads to a practice that is safe, creative and delicious for everybody.
Philosophy
Observing your mind is the only way towards real change
Yoga philosophy is not a purely intellectual exercise, nor is it the study of ancient and stuffy texts that bear no relevance to our modern lives. In fact, it is quite the opposite: yoga philosophy brings inspiration, guidance, insight, understanding, comfort, support and freedom to our lives. It touches our heart and soul, reminding us of truths we inherently know, but have forgotten.
Fundamental to this process is the practice of meditation, which has a place of honour in our own personal practice and in our teachings. To us, meditation is regularly taking some silent time to focus our attention inward and is the key to becoming aware of ancient patterns of behaviour that hold us back from being who we actually want to be. This is why it is said that yoga is the science of self-realization: realizing who you truly are will melt away sorrow and suffering.
Practice
Theories might sound great on paper, but they are only valuable when they can be put into practice. Our teacher Paul Grilley says it well: “if a theory inspires you to practice, it is a good theory. If it doesn’t, it is not.”
This is why our trainings are a mix of both. We study anatomy and then test the premises in the context of our own bodies and those of our colleagues. We study philosophy and then observe our own minds during asana practice and meditation.
We then take what we have observed in practice and study it. What can we learn from our experience? In this way, yoga is always alive, meaningful and true – both for ourselves and our students.
